33rd Burials at
Confederate Cemetery in Chattanooga
In 1867, the bodies of 887 Confederates who died in Chattanooga, Tennessee,
between January and May, 1863, were moved from graves in a flood prone area near
the Tennessee River to higher ground. Many, if not all, of these men were
wounded at Murfreesboro and taken to the hospital at Chattanooga where they
later died. The wooden grave markers were still readable and their names were
recorded by a Col. R. L. Watkins who prepared a list from which these names were
taken.
