CHAPLAIN’S CORNER
Greetings in the name of our gracious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! How good it is to be a child of the light! Jesus said in Matt. 5:14-16, “14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
We can see from this scripture that we have been given an incredible responsibility. When Jesus comes into our lives we inherently reflect His image of pure light. What happens when you turn on a light in a dark room? The darkness disappears of course. When that light is turned on the darkness is nowhere to be found. This also happens spiritually when we invite Jesus into our hearts. The darkness there has to flee. Darkness and light can not be found in the same spot.
The second half of verse fourteen says that we are like a city on a hill that cannot be hid. Just tell your co-workers that you are a Christian, say a few “Praise the Lords” and everyone will watch your every move under a microscope to see how you respond to various stimuli. But guess what. Cities were built on hills because they were easy to defend and hard to attack. The Holy Spirit is your knight in shinning armor and will come to defend you until all of your enemies are defeated. Your enemies will wind up bashing themselves to pieces on the bedrock of your city because you are the apple of God’s eye.
In verse fifteen we see that we are not to hide the light of Jesus when he comes into our lives or be a closet Christian but we share what Jesus has done in our lives so that others may be encouraged and that their eyes will be opened where they can see the goodness of God and invite Jesus into their lives. Once these have the light shining in them then they will give light to all in their realm of influence and so on. The light continues to grow and darkness diminishes.
Now, you may ask why would we want to do this. The answer is found in verse sixteen. So that people will see our good works and not glorify us but glorify God. All things are to be done to God’s glory. When God receives the glory then people get saved from their sins. People bless each other. The blind see and the lame walk. Miracles happen. Husbands and wives are reconciled. Children honor their parents. Wars cease. Nations heal. You may call me a dreamer but if you ask me it is not such a bad dream to have. Actually, this is Scriptual. In 2Ch. 7:14 the Word says, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”
So let us let our light shine and maybe we can start a new movement in this land and God will be glorified.
