Yellowhammers
Reenacting World Series Champions
Wilson's Creek 2000
by Capt. Darryl Masters
O that we now had here
But ten or twenty of those men in Alabama
That do no work today!
What is he that wishes so? Not my trusty first sergeant?
If we are mark'd to die, we are enow
To do the South loss; and if to live,
The fewer men, the greater share of honor.
Rambo's will, I beseech thee sergeant, wish not for one man more...
No, faith, my NCO, wish not a man from Alabama.
I would not lose so great an honor
As one man more, methinks, would share from us.
O, do not wish one more!
Rather proclaim it, Sgtrusty, through the company,
That he which hath no stomach for this fight,
Let him depart; we will give him gas money.
We would not fight in that man's company
That fears his fellowship to die with us.
This day is call'd the feast of Abnerdoubleday.
He that outlives this day, and drives 12 hours home,
Will stand taller when this day is nam'd,
And rouse himself at the name of Abnerdoubleday.
He that shall see this day, and live old age,
Will yearly on the vigil toast his pards,
And say, "Tomorrow is St. Abnerdoubleday."
Then he will strip his sleeves and show his scars,
And lift his breeches and point to muscles he pull'd,
And say, "These wounds I had on Abnerdoubleday Day Day."
Old men like Rambo and Whaley forget; and all shall be forgot,
But we'll remember with a smile,
The feats we did that day. Then shall our names,
Spanky, Pollard, Dannydean, Captdaryl,
Reddman, Sgtrusty, Shep, and Dr. Ed,
Be in their cups and remembering.
This story shall the good baseballer repeat ad nauseum,
And St. Abnrdoubleday Day Day shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it may be remembered--
We few, we happy, drunken few, we band of brothers.....
And pards in Alabama now dry and in bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And beg us please to not repeat the story again,
Since they did not fight with us upon St. Abnerdoubleday Day.
Thanks to Journeys Period Toy Store for providing the bats, balls, bases, and umpire. Also, thanks for the unique opportunity to play in this tournament, and the glorious engraved period bat and two period balls as a trophy!
